NYB’s Latest Project: A Mussel Ridge '46

In 2022, Newport Yacht Builders latest new-build project is a Mussel Ridge ‘46. Thanks to NYB’s previous work on Mussel Ridge boats, prospective clients approached Jim about doing theirs. She is now in the yard in Newport, Rhode Island and the team is hard at work getting her ready for a spring 2023 debut.

1. How did Newport Yacht Builders get involved in this current Mussel Ridge project?

Jim was contacted by the clients. They came to the shipyard to look at Pretti Rose, a 54-foot Mussel Ridge, and to talk more about what they wanted to build.

2. Walk us through the process, from scanning to build.

There were two Mussel Ridge 46’ boats up in Maine that were out of the mold and in the process of being built so Jim went up to Maine for the day and scanned both of these vessels. Once we had these two scans registered, we then took the approved and detailed 3D model of the boat’s interior to make sure it fit within the envelope of the scans. From this, 3D production files for all interior components were developed and sent to our CNC (Computer Numerical Control) cutter. The interior components are now being assembled and set up on the interior modules on the shop floor for final paint, plumbing, wiring and then it will all be dropped into the hull.

3. In the past you’ve talked a lot about “cloud point files,” what are they?

A point cloud file is a large collection of points acquired to create 3D representations of existing structures. Point cloud files support the design process by providing real-world context where you can recreate the referenced objects or insert additional models. Once a point cloud is attached to a drawing, you can use it as a guideline for drawing, change its display, or apply a color style to distinguish different features.

4. When is the project slated to be finished?

We are hoping to be finished by spring of 2023.

5. Are there more Mussel Ridge projects on the horizon?

Not at the moment but we’re hoping to new inquiries come through soon.
